Yasmin’s Questions

1. What is your favourite Make up Look?

When I go on a night out, my go to make up look is a smokey eye with winged liner and false lashes, the more dramatic the better.

2. What is your favourite TV Show? (it can be soap or series or anything!)

At the moment I am completely hooked on Breaking Bad, I can’t believe I have only started watching it this summer, I have been missing out! If you haven’t been watching it you seriously need to get it into your life!

3. List your top 3 high street brands that you love?

New Look, Dorothy Perkins, Primark! I probably buy the majority of my clothes from these stores as they are really affordable and they always seem to have cute dresses that I love!

4. What is the best gift you have ever received?

My parents and my sister got me a lovely ring for my graduation from university. I didn’t take it off for 3 months because I love it so much, but now I’m scared of losing it so I’m saving it for nice occasions only!

5. What is your much-loved colour lipstick and brand?

MAC MAC MAC! Always MAC, at the moment my favourite colour is Crosswires, I love coral shades and think they are great for summer, but also in the winter to brighten up darker outfit choices. I am lusting after Shy Girl right now, so I think that will have to be a cheeky purchase this month!

6. Do you prefer heels or flats?

I love heels, but I find them so uncomfortable if I’m honest…I am definitely a flats girl through and through.

7. What one item of clothing can you not live without?

My black leather biker jacket. So comfy and goes with just about everything. It has nice stud detailing on the shoulders which means it is still on trend this season.

8. What would be your dream job?

I would really love to work in PR or Marketing somewhere in London. I am currently interning at a Beauty PR agency in London, and I am loving it so I am really excited about what the future holds for me!

9. What word describes you best?

Laura :) I’m no good at these type of questions, sorry!!

10. If you were given a free 2 week holiday what destination would you choose?

Mexico! I have been twice before but I think it is the most amazing place for young people. Not only are the beaches beautiful, but there is so much to do there too. The eco parks are amazing, you can snorkel in lagoons filled with lots of types of fish, swim with dolphins, swim in underground caves and jump from cliff into a river if you want! The nightlife in Cancun is fantastic too and hosts the best club in the world Coco Bongos. Imagine acrobatics, West End Musical numbers, Club Classics, more cocktails and shots than you could ever want, your favourite film characters and tonnes of balloons all in one room … and that just about that sums it up!

11. What made you choose the name for your blog?

It took me forever to come up with Must Have Girl. I tried about a million different ideas but most were taken and the rest were silly. I finally settled on Must Have Girl because I am always lusting after beauty and fashion pieces that for me are Must Haves, so I think that it sums me up quite nicely!

Autumn Days: Punk Picks

So Autumn is finally upon us, and I have to say that I am actually very happy about it. Don’t get me wrong I love the sunshine and warmer Summer months, but there is something about Autumn that just cannot be beaten. My favourite part just has to be the fashion. I love being able to keep myself toastie in thick cable knits, boots, fur coats, hats and scarves. So cosy!

I wanted to share with you a few of my favourite pieces that I have seen over the last few weeks. The punk trend is already big this Autumn so I wanted to show you my take on this style that isn’t too extreme for those who are more girly girl than edgy rocker. I bought these gorgeous boots yesterday and I have a feeling that I am going to be living in them this season, they are right on trend but also great for anyone shopping on a budget like me!

What do you think of my punk picks? Will you be rocking the punk trend this A/W? What are your punk inspired fashion finds?

Ambermist Instant Tanning Mousse and Perfection Brush*

Image of Ambermist Instant Tanning Mousse and Perfection Brush

I was a bit of a latecomer to the world of fake tan, only trying it out for the first time last year after I was persuaded by my permanently tanned housemate to give it a go. I have to say, after I had gotten over my fear of looking like a wotsit and actually tried it out, I really loved the end result. My skin looked much healthier and I felt that I could ditch my opaque tights and bare my usually milk bottle white legs! So when Ambermist contacted me about try out out their Instant Tanning Mousse and Perfection brush I was really excited to put them to the test.

To prepare my skin for the tan, I exfoliated my whole body in the shower paying particular attention to drier areas such as knees, elbows and ankles. I then used a body butter to hydrate my skin ready for the tan. I normally use a mitt to apply my fake tan because it allows for an even coverage, it is quick and it stops you from getting orange stained palms. But this time I was given the very interesting Perfection Brush to apply the Instant Tanning Mousse. I was slightly daunted by the prospect of using a brush as I am clumsy so I was worried about getting streaky legs.
I applied a pump of mousse straight onto the brush and buffed it into my skin in circular motions. I used lighter swipes on my knees, elbows, feet, hands and face to prevent too much colour in these areas. I found that the brush was great for applying the tan to my hands and feet in particular, which normally is an area prone to mistakes as a mitt does not give a gentle enough application to blend the colour into the skin. The brush was also great to use on my face as I could blend the tan into my hairline. The only issue that I had with it was that a few of the bristles came out sticking to the tan, but this might just be because it was the first time I had used it. I really liked the way the tan applied using the brush though and I will continue to use it instead of my mitt because of the more blended application. You can also use the brush for contouring of the face and body which is really interesting and something I am going to try on my face.

Image of Ambermist Perfection Brush

As for the tan, it is similar to St Moriz as it comes in the pump bottle, however I found that it was more pigmented and one pump of the mousse went a long way so I think you get good value for money with this product. The colour itself is perfect for my skin tone and I feel that my tan is natural looking. While it does have the fake tan smell, I can only smell it when I sniff my skin before I washed of the guide colour, so I don’t think the scent is much of a giveaway either.
Upon application of the mousse, there is a guide colour so you can tell where you have applied the product and avoid over applying it. This tan can be left to develop for about 8 hours before showering it off to leave your skin naturally golden. However, you can also apply makeup on top of the tan and go out with it still developing as you have an instant tan due to the guide colour, which is great for people who are busy like me! I am really impressed with the formula of the tanning mousse as it is paraben, alcohol and cruelty free and has an aloe vera gel base so it is great for sensitive skin.

I applied the fake tan 5 days ago now and the colour is still there and showing no signs of wearing off just yet, which is great. I will definitely be applying it again this weekend and I think that this might just have become my new favourite tanning product.

Image of Ambermist Instant Tanning Mousse

I really love this product and I recommend it for both fake tan users and newbies too, and especially the brush for people who are worried about streaking. You can get hold of yours now from the Ambermist website, where you can purchase the Instant Tanning Mousse for £10 and the Perfection Brush for £14.95. Happy tanning!

My Olympia Beauty Haul!

I am currently interning at a beauty PR agency based in London which has a lot of perks, most recently I was very lucky to receive some tickets to go to Olympia Beauty. For those of you that might not know about it, Olympia Beauty is a trade beauty event at Kensington Olympia in London. Loads of beauty companies have stands there and are offering their products at great discounts and there are even some free samples to try on the day. There is also a range of seminars given from beauty professionals on a wide range of topics over the two days.

So on Sunday myself and Amy from The Calendar Girl, headed to Olympia to catch some beauty bargains. As there was so many great discounts I just HAD to have a little bit of a splurge and treat myself to a few goodies, which I would like to share with you all now.
One of the first stands I visited was NYX, I had never tried out their products before so seeing as there were fantastic discounts on their makeup I just had to try out a few of the products! I bought myself a NYX LSS Round Lipstick in ‘Black Cherry, which is a gorgeous deep berry shade and perfectly on trend for A/W13. . The formula is mineral based and I found it really hydrating and intensely pigmented. Because of the creamy texture, I felt that it applied almost too easily and I had to blot my lips as I think I looked like a little girl who had been playing with mummy’s make up! I would apply using a lip brush next time to make sure I had an even coating. I found I had to reapply after eating though. I would highly recommend this lipstick as a cheap alternative to MAC as I think that the product was great quality for the price. At Olympia, I paid just £3 for this gem! However you can still get hold of yours at a great budget price of £4 from the NYX website where there are 124 shades on offer. I will definitely be investing in more….
I have been desperately looking for a good mascara that really does lengthen my lashes. I decided to pick up the Pin-Up Tease mascara, which is part of the Boudoir Collection, as it has the curved wand which I really get on with as I find it so much easier to apply because it separates and lengthens the lashes in the right direction. The wand is also a plastic comb rather than bristles. I find that plastic combs really work to separate and lengthen my lashes, where bristles just push against them and make them clump together. I tried this mascara out over the last two days and I am already in love. My lashes looked amazingly long I had to go and show my sister! I really recommend this and I will definitely be repurchasing. I bought the Pin-Up Tease Mascara for £5, but you can purchase it too from the NYX website for just a little bit more, at £6.50, which I think is a real bargain.
Image of Sleep-In Rollers
I have had my eye on these babies for ages now after a friend of mine got some and raved non-stop about how wonderful they are! They had a great show discount and were selling the original set for just £10, so I decided to splash out and give them a go myself. I have read a lot of mixed reviews from bloggers, some who think these rollers are the best thing since sliced bread and others who despise them, but I like to try things our myself before I have an opinion on the product. The set comes with 20 rollers, a small velvet bag of long bobby pins and an instruction/promotional DVD. I have to say I thought that the DVD was a load of rubbish, I find Hollie Wakeham really quite irritating! But it was fairly informative so I had a good idea how to put these rollers in. I decided to part blow dry my hair so it was still damp to achieve more of a curl/bounce. I have to admit I struggled putting the rollers in at first, as they seemed to be very loose and I didn’t think they would stay in all night. After a few attempts I managed to get the rollers in a little better and secured the hair to the roller with a bobby pin.
Image of Laura from Must Have Girl wearing Sleep-In Rollers
Now, while these rollers are marketed as rollers you can sleep in, that does not mean they are comfortable… I have never tried plastic rollers but I can assume the Sleep-in Rollers are comfier, but don’t expect it to be amazing! They are quite squishy and made of foam so that helped with comfort, but it was the velcro that irritated me more than anything. It was really scratchy on the delicate skin around my ears, neck and scalp (basically everywhere then!) so I found that a little bit uncomfortable. I did sleep the whole night and only woke up a couple of times, so I am really surprised I didn’t pull them out in the night in a fit of anger! I would use them again to sleep in, as I have heard they get squishier with more use. However if you want to avoid discomfort I would suggest putting them in first thing in the morning after washing your hair and letting them set throughout the day.
Image of Laura from Must Have Girl after using Sleep-In Rollers
Oh dear!
So when it comes to taking the rollers out, it is much easier than putting them in. You simple have to pull out the bobby pins and gently unroll the roller leaving you with big bouncy hair. When I had removed all the rollers, I was a little frightened with the results! My hair was VERY big and slightly too voluminous for my liking and hair cut. I carefully used my GHDs to style my hair how I wanted it, and it was a big improvement. I really liked how it turned out in the end and I think it was worth the slight discomfort so I will definitely be reusing the Sleep-In Rollers. You can get your hands on the Sleep-In Rollers from their website where they retail for £24.95 a set.

much better!
Image of Melody Claire Elegant Depilation Hair Removal System
While wondering around the show, I was beckoned over by a lady to sample an interesting hair removal product, the Melody Claire Elegant Depilation Hair Removal System. She asked me to hold out my arm and she buffed a small area with the tool for a few seconds in circular motions and then asked me to feel my skin. It was so smooth and completely hairless. So naturally she assured me that it could be used on ANY hair on the body. Of course I was very interested as shaving is annoying because regrowth is so fast and waxing and epilation is painful! They were running a special show deal where it was buy one kit get one free, so I split it with Amy, meaning we paid just £10 each for our kits. The system works as the pads contain micro-crystals that when rubbed against the skin in circular motions gently buffs away the hair. It does leave the skin quite dry, but not rough, so I would recommend using a body butter on the legs afterwards to re-hydrate the skin
I tried it out on my legs when I got home and it took a while for me to cover both legs, but it was lovely and smooth. However by the time I woke up, I could feel slight stubble coming through. I think that the kit is great for finer hairs such as on the arms where they tested it on us, but for coarser, fast growing hair, it might not be worth the money and effort. I was assured that a kit would last a year as it contains two size pads the larger for legs and underarms and the smaller for the face or smaller areas of hair, as well as 4 replacement pads for each size. I found the kit is great for fine slow growing hair but for leg hair it is no better than shaving. I don’t think that I would repurchase the kit, but I will definitely be giving it a go on fine hairs like the upper lip!! If you want to try the kit out for yourself you can get one from the Melody Claire website where they retail for £19.99 each.

Beauty UK’s Posh Pout Lip Crayons

Image of Beauty UK's Posh Pout Lip Crayons
L-R Corally Correct, How Nude!, Power to the Purple,
Would I Lilac To You, Big Pinkin and Sugar Plum Fairy

I was recently given a couple of the new Beauty UK Posh Pout Lip Crayons to try out. Now I am a big lover of lipsticks/crayons/balms/lip glosses, and generally my rule is the bolder the better! I love wearing bright lips, particularly in the winter months when everything is so dull and drab, I just have to get some colour out there! So luckily for me, this whole range is bright and colourful and so it is completely up my street.

I picked out two crayons in ‘Corally Correct’, a lovely citrus coral shade and ‘Power to the Purple’ which is a plum/burgundy colour and both are perfect for Autumn/Winter. I did really love ‘Big Pinkin’ which is so pink and very Barbie-like, but it is similar to a Topshop Lip Crayon I already own. Also, I think ‘Would I Lilac To You’ is also a beautiful shade but I’m not sure if I could pull off that pale parma violet hue, both of these shades felt a little bit Nicki Minaj to me, so I thought it might be better to stay away!

I wore ‘Corally Correct’ when I went out to dinner last weekend, and I have to say that it is very pigmented and bold for such a budget buy. In fact when I swatched all of the colours they all had great pigment and are not at all sheer like some other lip crayons I have tried.

However I do have one criticism, and that is they are quite drying so if your lips are at all chapped I would give them a miss. I have worn the crayons over the top of a lip balm and found it much less matte and drying, so they are still very wearable!

Overall for just £2.99 I think it is a great buy, I wouldn’t expect these crayons to be amazing quality, but for such a low price, I think the boldness and amount of pigment cannot be flawed. So if you have a few pounds lying around and fancy trying out some new lip shades without financial risk I think these Posh Pout Lip Crayons are a great place to start. You can get your own from the Beauty UK stand at Superdrug or online from their website, and there six gorgeous shades to chose from. Superdrug are currently running a 3 for 2 promotion on Beauty UK cosmetics until Tuesday 24th September.

September Must-Haves

Collage of Must Have Girl's September Must Haves
There are so many things on my wish list this month, but unfortunately I am pretty strapped for cash right now so they are going to have to remain wishes… but a girl can dream right? I thought I would show you just a few of the things that I am lusting after this month.

I absolutely love this dress! Ever since the new Great Gatsby film came out earlier this year, I have been obsessing about anything remotely 1920s, and this flapper dress is beautiful. I love the intricate Art Deco style bead work and the scalloped hemline, it creates a new (or old!) take on the LBD. For £95 it is a little bit pricey, but it is so pretty that I think it is well worth the money.
I have been on the lookout for a new concealer for ages, I often find it difficult to find a balance between price and coverage as I am on a tight budget at the moment. However, I swatched this in Boots on Monday, and for such a low price, I thought that it had a very nice level of coverage. The concealer is a cream texture that is very pigmented, so on application to the skin it covers any blemishes. I have freckles on my hands, and the concealer completely covered them, so I imagine that it would work wonders on dark under eye circles and spots. I think this is great value for money and I would have definitely bought it there and then if they had ‘fair‘ in stock.
I am a huuuuge fan of MAC lipsticks and I have been lusting over this gorgeous pinky/purple hue for a while now. The lipstick is very blue toned, so I think that this is a great colour to liven up darker Autumn/Winter outfits. These lipsticks have great pigment, last for hours and are very moisturising on the lips, so I know that this will be worth it I have just had my birthday and was kindly given a MAC voucher, so I think this shade will have to be one of my purchases!
I have been after a new pair of winter boots for the last couple of weeks, and I have been trying to find some Chelsea Boots, but I just haven’t found the perfect comfy pair yet. So in the meantime I have found this lovely pair from Topshop which I think would be great to go with most Autumn and Winter outfits. I love suede, but I always worry about ruining it if I get caught in the rain, so I think I will probably end up opting for a leather pair, but I still love these boots too… decisions!!
I have been after a new bag for a few months, but I have been biding my time hoping I land my dream job so I can treat myself to a nice designer number…but sadly that hasn’t happened yet, so I am going to go for the next best thing: Zara. I love Zara bags, I always think they look a lot more expensive than they actually are. I really like the boxy look of this bag and think it would be perfect to team with any outfit this Autumn, and for only £29.99, I think this is a steal!
So those were my September Must-Haves, now I just have to get my hands on them….
What do you think of my choices? What are your September Must-Haves?

Skincare Haul

Recently I have been having a bit of trouble with my skin. My skin has by no means ever been perfect, but normally I might suffer just one or two spots once in a while. However for the last couple of months my skin has been pretty bad, and I think the culprit was wearing sun cream on my face. It completely blocks up my pores and makes me breakout.

I have also been a little bit lazy with my skincare routine, and I have often skipped cleansing and toning and made do with a face wipe – terrible I know! So because of this my skin has got worse. I feel like I have about 2319478274 spots right now.

So I popped to town this afternoon to make a few purchases to help improve my skin, and I will definitely be letting you all know how I get on with them.

Image of Must Have Girl's Skincare Haul
Okay, so this is not strictly skincare…but it goes on your skin and I bought it today, so I’m counting it! I’m a really big fan of this self tanner so I’m going to devote a blog post to it in the near future, as the sun has disappeared a few of us might be in need of a little of this! So watch this space! In the meantime you can get hold of yours for a meagre £3 from Wilkinsons. Bargain!
I really needed to get a cleanser and toner but I’m a little bit broke at the moment and that means I really can’t afford to splash out on anything expensive. While this is a bit bargain basement, it is from Boots so I trust that it will do the job. I will let you know how I get on though. Boots are currently running a 1/3 off deal on these, so you can get the Cleansing Lotion for £1.86 and the Toner for £1.79
I have never tried this before, but I normally love Soap and Glory products, they always smell delicious. After reading the back of the box I just had to buy it. The Detox Mask essentially melts away all the dirt, oil and blackheads leaving your pores unblocked. Sounds like just what I need at the moment. The mask actually changes colour once it has worked, so you know how long to keep it on for. I am also very happy that it is paraben free and it contains natural essential oils. You can purchase the mask from the Soap and Glory Website, or in store from Boots where it is retailing at £11.50.

I haven’t tried this either, and I have heard some very mixed reviews. I’m not expecting this to be a miracle cure, but I’m hoping that it will reduce the redness and swelling if I do have a large spot that appears. The cream claims to reduce size and redness within 4 hours which sounds very promising, but I will let you know how this goes for my skin! Again I purchased this cream from Boots for £4.26.

I will review these spot busting products in a couple of weeks and let you know if they are working for my skin. In the meantime if anyone can recommend some wonder products please do!

Have you tried any of these products? What would you most like to use?

Seventeen’s Off The Wall Graffiti Nail Effects

Image of Seventeen's Off The Wall Graffiti Nail Effects

I am a huge fan of all things nail art, but sometimes I just don’t have the time to dedicate to creating an intricate pattern, so for busy times I think it is great to have textured nail polish on hand to create interesting, yet quick eye-catching nails. I bought the Seventeen Off The Wall Graffiti Nail Effects polish a couple of months ago because I absolutely love the way it looks in the bottle, but I have only just got around to trying it out.

I bought the polish in Monochrome, but my sister bought it in Bluetone,  a glittery blue version, and it looks amazing for a night out. Personally I would use a coat or two of black nail polish underneath to make the white flecks really pop, but it is personal choice. The polish goes on really evenly and one coat is enough (as long as you shake it up) because there are lots of bits in there!, I did have a couple of sparse patches, on one or two nails so I touched those up with another coat to make sure the flecks were dispersed fairly evenly.

Image of Seventeen's Off The Wall Graffiti Nail Effects Swatch
The only thing I don’t like that much is there are some long strands of black glittery bits in there which kept hanging off the tips of my nails so I ruined a nail trying to pull it off! But because of the nature of the polish the tiny bit of damage to the paint isn’t really noticeable, so I would definitely wear it again. The polish is a bargain at £3.99 from the Seventeen stand at Boots or online here and for such a low price, it is well worth trying it out.

Have you tried Off the Wall Graffiti Nail Effects? What did you think? Are there any other textured nail polishes that have caught your eye this season?

So I hope you enjoy my blog, and please do bear with me while I get everything up and running!
